What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
On a built-in the noise almost never comes from inside the cabinet. It comes from the grille, and inland it is usually the condenser fan.
Why that is usually the answer
Dust and pollen reach the blade, the balance goes, and it rattles; or the bearing has simply logged far more hours than the same fan would at the coast, because the unit runs longer against valley heat. A deeper hum carried through the cabinetry is more often the compressor mounts, which go hard over the years. On the day it starts, neither one is urgent. Once the fan stops turning it is, because the unit cannot shed heat at all and what was a fan becomes a compressor.
Where it usually turns out to be
Run hours are the honest reason these parts wear out sooner in Escondido than they do at the beach. A condenser fan that cycles gently through a mild coastal day cycles a great deal harder in a valley that spends its summer afternoons well above what the appliance was rated against. Nothing about that is a defect in the appliance. Bearings simply count hours and do not care why they are turning.
