Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling?

The freezer answers the first question.
Why that is usually the answer
If it is still hard while the refrigerator has climbed, the fault is already confined to one half of the cabinet: a Sub-Zero built-in cools the two compartments with two separate sealed systems, and one of them is plainly still doing its job. What is left is the refrigerator circuit: an evaporator fan that has stopped, a defrost failure icing its coil, or a control board that has stopped running that circuit at all. In Escondido there is a fourth: a condenser too loaded with dust to shed heat into a valley afternoon. If the warmth arrives after lunch and clears overnight, that fourth one is where we start. All of them are ordinary parts and usually one visit.
Where it usually turns out to be
The time-of-day pattern is the single most useful thing an inland customer can tell us, and it is the detail people leave out because it makes the appliance sound fine. It is not fine. A refrigeration system has only so much capacity, and the room spends it: every degree the kitchen gains comes out of what the appliance had in hand. A coil carrying a season of valley dust still has enough left over on a cool morning and has spent all of it by late afternoon. One appliance, one fault, and two sets of readings that disagree entirely depending on whether a technician is standing there at nine in the morning or five in the afternoon.
What we check, in order: airflow through the grille and the state of the condenser; evaporator fan current draw on the refrigerator circuit; the defrost heater and thermistor, since ice on the coil blocks air long before it blocks anything else; the refrigerator-side control and any fault history it has stored; and the door gasket, measured for pull rather than looked at. The sealed system comes last, not first. With the freezer still holding, it is hardly ever the answer, and guessing at it is where the large bills on this equipment come from.

My ice cubes are small and hollow. Is that the ice maker or the water?
Inland it is usually the water. Small, hollow or half-formed cubes mean the mold never filled: an overdue filter, low pressure, or a fill tube and valve screen narrowed by mineral scale. No ice at all from a freezer that is still cold is the harvest side instead: the module, its thermostat or the ejector motor. Opposite repairs, so pressure at the inlet valve gets read first.
